Education and Instruction
From John Cashman, Education Coordinator:
Coaching in Majors and Babe Ruth, I still come across kids that throw the ball improperly, either due to poor arm action, motion or ball grip. Improper fielding technique and hitting are big problems as well. A kid that is hitting the ball great in T-ball up to Minor-B may struggle in Minor-A or Majors – where they use wooden bats - because by the time he/she gets to those divisions, the player must have a quicker swing and a solid swing plane to be successful.
This is why it’s so important that coaches at the lower levels MUST understand and teach the basics.
I hope you'll find the materials on these pages and links helpful in preparing you for teaching the basics to our fine young athletes.
Coaching Outlines
The Ripken Way
A group of 10 ABYB coaches had the opportunity to attend a clinic in February 2010 led by Cal Ripken, Jr., Billy Ripken, and John Habyan.
The "Ripken Way" Coaching Outline was distributed to the coaches and served as the basis for the clinic presentation. The training advice and drills should provide effective techniques to add to your practices.
If you have specific questions, contact one of the coaches listed below who attended the clinic:
