Acton-Boxborough Summer Baseball
In addition to spring and fall seasons, during the summer ABYB fields multiple teams in four leagues:
Information about each program is provided below. If you have questions or would like more information, please email the ABYB summer coordinator at:
.
Bay State is a competitive league with teams throughout eastern Massachusetts in which players must be selected to be on one of the A-B teams. The league's website is at www.baystatebaseball.com.
Who is eligible to play Bay State?
Bay State baseball is available to ABYB players who have been selected to play on the team and who:
-
Played in either the ABYB fall 2009 or spring 2010 season if the player resides in Acton or Boxborough, and/or
-
Participated in the ABYB Little League program in the spring 2010 season if the player does not reside in Acton or Boxborough.
Bay State provides for play in three age categories:
-
9-10 year olds (C division)
-
10-11 year olds (B division)
-
11-12 year olds (A division)
What determines a player’s Bay State age?
A player’s league age is defined by his/her calendar age as of April 30 of the current season. As an example:
-
If a player turns 11 by April 30, 2010, he/she would be eligible to play on either the A or B team, but not the C team.
-
If a player turns 11 on May 1 or later, he/she would be eligible to play on the B or the C team.
-
The minimum is 9 for all divisions; the maximum age is 12.
What is the selection process for Bay State?
The head coach for each divisional team, along with input from other evaluators, will select his/her roster following two tryout sessions to be held in May. Teams typically have 12 core players, as well as alternates who may or may not get called on to play. Each division normally has one ABYB team, though there can be more than one team per division.
How do I register for Bay State?
Use the ABYB Registration System and select the "Summer 2010" program. This program leads you through registration for all of the summer baseball options.
When are the tryouts?
There are two tryout dates for 9 and 10 year-olds, two for 10 and 11 year-olds, two for 11 and 12 year-olds. So, if you are 9, you should try to attend both tryouts for 9 and 10 year-olds. If you are 10 years old, you should attend both tryouts for either the 9 and 10 year-olds or both tryouts for the 10 and 11 year-olds.
Players are encouraged to attend two tryouts to be evaluated by the most evaluators.
The evaluations happened in May 2010 on May 10, May 13, and May 17.
If your child is not selected for Bay State and would like to play in the MIB league, please indicate that during registration. Since there is a higher fee to participate in Bay State, those not selected to play in Bay State will be refunded the appropriate portion of that payment when placed on an MIB team.
Who are the A-B Bay State coaches?
Coaches for each team will typically have coached in the ABYB program in spring immediately prior to the summer and/or will have coached several seasons in the ABYB program. They will be CORI-certified and approved by the ABYB Board.
The 2010 head coaches up for confirmation by the Board are:
C Team: Dan McOsker
B Team: Dave Peduto and Jim Hurley
A Team: Brett Gotthelf
What Can Players/Parents Expect in Bay State?
Players selected for Bay State teams are asked to attend 75-80% or more of the games. If vacation schedules or other commitments would result in missing more than 20-25% of the games, players should ask to be considered as a Bay State “alternate” and/or play in the MIB league.
Schedule: The season begins in early July and runs through mid-August
-
The C division plays a minimum of 12 games up to a maximum of about 20 games, normally on Mondays, Wednesdays and weekends.
-
The A and B divisions play roughly a minimum of 18 games up to a maximum of about 30 games, normally on Tuesdays, Thursdays and the weekends.
Conflicts with other sports/activities: If a team does well and continues into the Tournament of Champions (ToC), there will be overlap between Bay State and pre-season practice of other sports over the last week or two of the baseball season in August. If your player is selected for Bay State, please consider that making the ToC is a significant accomplishment, and in fairness to that team it is expected that attendance at ToC games will take priority over other sports/activities.
Playing Time: According to the Bay State rules, players are guaranteed a minimum of three innings of play in the field and one at bat in each game. However, ABYB encourages coaches to play every player at least 4 innings (of a full 6-inning game) in each game and to rotate substitutions so that the same few kids do not sit out every game.
Travel: There are 35+ cities and towns that participate in Bay State. Travel to away games varies from 20 minutes to one hour. There also can be significant driving to and from road games, as far away as Boston and Marblehead, as an example, and as close as Sudbury or Westford. Game times for away games typically begin at 5:45pm. For home games, where we have lights at Veterans' Field, games often begin at 7:00pm.
Parental commitments: Bay State parents are asked to help with various things throughout the season, including field maintenance after games as well as helping with the various activities that go along with “hosting” a qualifying or tournament weekend. Activities include getting fields ready before and between games (there can be up to 16 games over that “host” weekend), staffing the food stand, keeping score, emptying the trash and generally committing to be at the field as a volunteer for 2-4 hours (and upwards, if desired).

Middlesex Independent Baseball (MIB) League provides for play in the 9-10 and 11-12 year-old age groups. ABYB fields one or more teams in each age group, depending on the number of interested players.
ABYB will attempt to field as many teams in this league (within two age groups) as there is interest. We will need to have at least 13-14 players and a set of coaches to form a team in an age group.
Who is eligible to play MIB?
Players on these age-based teams will be placed on a first-come, first-served basis based on registration date. (Any ABYB participation requirements? Residency requirements?)
There is no selection process/tryout required.
What determines a player’s MIB age?
A player’s league age is defined by his calendar age as of July 31 of the current season. The minimum age adhered to by ABYB is 9 for all divisions; the maximum age is 12, however 8 year olds can play who turn 9 by July 31.
How do I register for MIB?
Use the ABYB Registration System and select the "Summer 2010" program. This program leads you through registration for all of the summer baseball options.
Who are the A-B MIB coaches?
Because of the large number of players interested in this league, we are always in need of coaches for these teams. Please consider signing up to help. We frequently end up with co-head coaches due to scheduling conflicts, and this has worked out fine.
What Can Players/Parents Expect in MIB?
Players on these teams can miss up to roughly one third of the games due to vacation or other commitments. However, there will be no refund of registration fees.
Schedule: Games for these teams will begin after July 4 and continue for approximately six to seven weeks. Teams usually play two games per week; most games are during the week (Monday through Thursday), usually beginning around 5:30-6:00pm.
Playing Time: Equal playing time will be required for each player at a game as long as the player has made the coach aware of prior absences in advance of missing a game or practice.
Travel: Travel time to away game varies from 15 to 30 minutes. Other participating towns have included: Westford, Concord-Carlisle, Littleton, Groton, Bedford and Harvard.
Parental commitments: Team parents are encouraged to help with various tasks throughout the season, including field maintenance before or after games.

Senior League Summer Baseball
Senior League summer baseball is available to players in Acton and Boxborough who have participated in AB Babe Ruth programs or organized baseball at the junior or senior high schools. There are two leagues:
The Lou Tompkins League is a competitive summer league with more information available at http://www.ltabaseball.com/.
A-B fields one team in each of four age categories:
C Division = 13 year olds
B Division = 13-14 year olds
A Division = 14-16 year olds
Senior Division = 16-19 year olds
Who is eligible to play Lou Tompkins for A-B?
Players who live in Acton or Boxborough, or students who attend school in Acton, are eligible to try out for Lou Tompkins. A total of 12 players will be selected for each team at each age level.
Tryouts are used to pick these select teams. If more players sign up for these teams than there are available roster spots, there will be cuts to get to an appropriate roster size. Any players of appropriate age who are cut from these rosters can choose to play on a Minuteman League team.
What determines a player’s Lou Tompkins league age?
Senior Division is designed for 16-19 year olds, with a limit per roster of five (5) 19 year olds. (A player cannot be 20 on April 30, 2010). Division A is designed for 15-16 year olds. (A player cannot be 17 on April 30, 2010.) Division B is designed for 13-14 year olds. (A player cannot be 15 on April 30, 2010.) Division C is designed solely for 13 year old players (a player cannot be 14 on April 30, 2010) and a player turning 13 on May 1 to July 31 should have participated in their town’s spring 90-foot diamond league.
How do I register for Lou Tompkins?
Use the ABYB Registration System and select the "Summer 2010" program. This program leads you through registration for all of the summer baseball options.
When are the tryouts?
For players born between May 1, 1995 and April 30, 1997, tryouts are scheduled for May 15 and May 16 at 7:00 PM (updated on 5/12 11 PM) at the high school field.
For players born before May 1, 1995, tryouts are scheduled for May 22 and May 23 at 7:00 PM (updated on 5/19 8 PM) at the high school field.
A player has to attend only one of the tryout sessions for a given age group.
Who are the Lou Tompkins coaches?
TBD
What Can Players/Parents Expect in Lou Tompkins?
Schedule: See http://www.ltabaseball.com for detailed schedules for each age group. Games begin in mid-June and end in mid-August, followed by a Tournament of Champions for qualifying teams. There will be three games per week for each team with 2 games on weeknights and 1 game on the
weekend. The Tournament of Champions is a minimum of 2 games and could be as many as 5 games.
Conflicts with other sports/activities: Players on these teams are expected to miss no more than 5-6 games during the summer. If vacation schedules or other commitments would result in missing more than 5-6 games, then players ages 13-16 should register to play on the Minuteman League teams. There are no Minuteman teams for players ages 16-18 and as a result we will try to accommodate player’s schedules that would require missing more than 6 games where possible
Playing Time: Players are NOT guaranteed a minimum playing time on these teams, therefore rosters will be kept to 12 players. Players on A, B, or C team rosters may be invited to play on an older division team as an alternate player. Alternates for the C Division team will be on a Minuteman League (see below for information about the Minuteman League) team roster.
Travel: Travel time to away games varies from 15 minutes to 1 hour.
